Description

A historical survey of fourteen hundred years of Western classical music in the context of the evolution of Europe as a prime cultural center of the twenty-first century.   

This course has a session on instrumental music and on opera. The sessions include lectures and multimedia presentations of sample music and opera.

Objectives

After the course, you will:

1.  Internalize musical jargon, e.g., style period, sonata-allegro, symphony, recitative and aria, cabaletta, art song, etc. – useful in the art of systematic and intelligent listening to classical music and opera; and

2.  Have a better enjoyment of classical music concerts and classical music recordings.

INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC:  Invention and innovation

        The evolution of viols (bowed strings), wind instruments and keyboard instruments
